The Khumbu, Gateway to Everest…
At the gateway to Sherpa country, the Khumbu region of Nepal opens the way to the roof of the world: the famous Everest.
Sagarmatha for the Nepalese (“head of the ocean”), Chomolungama for the Tibetans (“mother goddess of the winds”), Everest for Westerners (since 1865 in honor of Sir George Everest, British surveyor and geographer)… three names for this imposing mountain on the border of Nepal and Tibet, the roof of the world, the mythical Everest!
In this paradise for trekkers, in the heart of the world’s highest mountains, travelers gaze fixedly at the snow-capped peaks. Trekking from village to village to acclimatize to the altitude before the big climb, traversing valleys at over 5,000 meters, reaching Everest Base Camp—trekking in the Khumbu region is a unique adventure.
Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is the gateway to the Khumbu. This small town is characterized by around a hundred buildings clinging to the mountainside in a semicircle, with awe-inspiring peaks as a backdrop.
It is from this town, the Sherpa capital, that trekkers and hikers set off to conquer some of the world's most beautiful and highest mountains, in the heart of the Khumbu-Everest massif. Ama Dablam (6,856m), Everest (8,848m), Nuptse (7,861m), Lhotse (8,501m), Pumori (7,165m): legendary peaks that inspire dreams in travelers to Nepal.
Among the major treks, the trek to Everest Base Camp is an essential route, offering an extraordinary view of the great summits.
Island Peak, at 6,189m, also holds a special place in the trekker's imagination: this mountain, the first trekking peak in Nepal, remains the most accessible Himalayan 6,000-meter peak.
Similarly, Mera Peak (6,476m) is also very accessible to any reasonably fit person and is undoubtedly the best compromise for exploring the Himalayan territories through the Khumbu region.
You can also choose Kala Patthar (5,550m), one of the most beautiful viewpoints overlooking Everest and the main peaks of the upper Khumbu.
And don't forget, at over 4,500m altitude, in the heart of the Khumbu, the turquoise lakes of Gokyo, jewels of the Himalayas.
While the Khumbu, gateway to Everest, is the setting for a legendary trek, the massif also has other attractions for travelers: a hike from village to village to meet the Sherpa people, the majority ethnic group of the Khumbu, not only allows for acclimatization but also offers the opportunity to discover the culture and traditions of this mountain range. It's also a chance to explore the region's Buddhist monasteries, such as those of Tyangboche, Pyangboche, or Thame...
When to go to the Khumbu-Everest?
The Khumbu region is a cold, semi-desert area subject to the monsoon, which brings heavy rainfall in the summer.
In winter, temperatures may barely rise above 0°C during the day, but can plummet to -15°C at night (and drop much lower depending on altitude, wind, etc.).
Spring and autumn are therefore the best times for trekking in the region.

Prérequis pour se lancer dans l'aventure Everest
La saison 2019 a malheureusement payé un lourd tribu à l’Everest avec 11 morts (885 permis d’ascension délivrés)…des accidents, bien sûr, mais aussi et surtout des gens qui n’étaient pas suffisamment entraînés/acclimatés ou épuisés et qui ont voulu continuer coûte que coûte sans écouter leur Guide/Sherpa.
La montagne ne pardonne pas les erreurs et gagne toujours.
Les autorités népalaises exigent donc, à présent, les 2 prérequis suivants pour pouvoir se lancer dans l’aventure de l’Everest :
Avoir avec vous un Certificat médical de bonne santé et condition physique (en anglais et, de préférence, rédigé sur ordinateur).
Prouver que vous avez réussi au moins 1 sommet népalais de 6500m ou plus.
